Hey Everyone,
I did some research using Google, and found a news article discussing the reasons why the author, Grishma Athavale, believed that the United States is falling behind other countries when comparing our education systems. You can read the article here... http://www.saratogafalcon.org/content/us-education-falling-behind-those-other-countries
I found that a lot of the facts that she stated could all be a reason why the US is falling behind other countries in the education department. The fact that US children aren't pressured to take extra classes after their schooling hours are finished seems to be a big reason why education is falling behind. Apparently in countries like Japan and India, students are practically pressured to take after school classes. The extra time and commitment allows their education level to surpass the US.
Also through my research, I found that, while the US only makes students go to school for an average of 180 days, Germany makes their students stay in school for 195 days. The extra days allow more information to be taught and learned.
This website also allowed users to comment on this article. One comment I read stated that Americans are lazy. I sort of agree with that statement as mothers and fathers come home from work and are tired. The last thing they want to do is complete homework for a class that they are not enrolled in. This is true for single parents too, who are not only tired from their job, but also have a lot more responsibility to take care of, so they do not have time to do homework.
Pretty much, the main point that I found through out, was that other countries spend more time in class and outside of class teaching and learning. Which is why the US is falling behind.
I dont think pressuring kids to take extra classes like that is American at all. The No Child Left Behind Act is what's wrong. It's not that the youth should be taking more classes, it's that they should be taking educational classes that push them instead of baby them. There is plenty of time in an 8 hour school day to get all the knowledge needed. You and I both got into college the old fashion way. Now if we could only get the teachers to care about the kids education instead of how well they do on a standardized test.
ReplyDeleteI think the extra classes do help though. It allows time for extra information to be learned. I am in a calculus class right now, and I know if i took the time to take an extra class it would help a lot.
ReplyDeleteI think that the extra classes are a good idea. sometimes the structure can be beneficial.
